The value of developing your strategic ‘story’

Tuesday March 31, 2015

Over the past few months I have either encouraged, or been invited, to work with Boards, Councils or Senior staff to develop their strategic thinking before they start their strategic planning. There’s no doubt it can make a huge difference to the direction and development of a plan. And in a time when money is tight and workloads are high, these discussions have often been the most energetic, hopeful, creative and joyful I’ve seen in the market place.

The City of Prospect Council and senior staff have developed some very innovative draft directions from their strategic thinking day- watch that space for leading ideas in local government. Rural Solutions  have really stepped out and up to new thinking about how they will add value in South Australia as a result of their leaders’ strategic thinking workshop. And I am working with a sensational group of emerging senior leaders within Primary Industries for whom this whole idea of developing a story – a narrative – as a guide for their agency has made so much sense to them that  within a minute I’ll be running behind them rather that leading their thinking.

I’m putting my ideas together in something I’m calling “Your strategic storybook” at the moment. Let me know if you’re interested.
