Stop hoping values will fix everything

Wednesday August 24, 2016

In several fora recently, when talking about how to fix complex problems, senior managers have resorted to statements about the need to further reinforce values statements as a major strategy.

It is values manifest in action, not values statements, that make the real difference. And preaching 'values' without a sophisticated multi-faceted strategy won't do the heavy lifting for you.

Over thirty years ago, I was part of the management team for a correctional services region in Victoria. Whilst my role was primarily a management one, I maintained a small caseload of my own. Within that case load were a number of men who had murdered. Despite the seriousness of their crime, they would have genuinely told me their values included trust, respect, and team work.

Resorting to values discussions alone won't help. Ideas don't move mountains - bulldozers move mountains.
