What will keep your executive position safe?

Wednesday July 15, 2015

Over the past few weeks several senior government people have asked me what they can do that will make their position safer, given the need for government to streamline the number of positions in some areas. For what it is worth, this has been my advice:

1. Stop thinking that just being very diligent and sound in your current role is enough – that is now just a given

2. Put your head up and ask:  What is my Premier asking me to do? What is my Government’s strategy at the moment? Can I find a line of sight between my work and that agenda?

3. Are you thinking strategically about what the State is trying to achieve? Are you talking/thinking/acting in a way that shows you are actively seeking to connect to your  Premier’s vision and strategies?

4. Are you staying well connected – not just with those you see all the time in daily work, but with colleagues in different parts of Government who can help you see how the pieces fit together, and where there might be opportunities to collaborate or at least add value to each other?

5. How are you presenting yourself and your ideas? These days graphically interesting one pagers of quality thinking and planning will help you to be seen as innovative, energetic and able to get to the point in a powerful way.
